The Turf Itself

As briefly mentioned earlier, Wincanton Racecourse is widely renowned as a course that offers horses a stern jumping challenge. It’s flat pretty much all the way round, however it’s known for being one of the quickest National Hunt courses in country when the going is good. It’s oval-shaped, about two miles in extent and has sharp bends; the main difficulty comes in the last part of the home straight where three hurdles come in quick succession. They are stiff fences that have claimed their fair share of victims and require a precise, skilled jumper with notable stamina. Ideally you want a horse that travels well and a jockey that knows how to position themselves well. Overly keen front runners tend to run out of steam before the end and those that leave it too long to attack can get find themselves with too much ground to make up.

Most Popular Wincanton Horse Racing Events

Wincanton betting is best known for a handful of semi-prestigious events that take place in February and November. The Kingwell Hurdle, a Grade 2 hurdle race run over two miles is probably the most prestigious of the lot. It’s reserved for horses aged four-years-old and above and is worth about £60,000. It serves as an important trial for the Champion Hurdle, which takes places a month later, and has been won by some truly memorable names, some of which we will review later. The meeting in November features the Grade 2 National Hunt hurdle race known as the Elite Hurdle, a Handicap race run over 1 mile 7 furlongs and 65 yards and for horses aged four-years-old and above. Then there’s the Rising Stars Novices’ Chase, a Grade 2 National Hunt steeplechase of 2 miles 4 furlongs and 35 yards reserved for four-year-olds; and finally the Badger Ales Trophy, a long distance steeplechase run over a distance of just over 3 miles.

Some Interesting Facts

Did you know that the Wincanton horse racing track is one of the fanciest tracks out of all we have reviewed, and was voted the 2015 Racegoers Club Best Small Racecourse in the South West and Wales category?! Widely famed for its family-friendly, inviting atmosphere and high-octane races that are spread across 17 meetings between October and May, it’s a venue that combines stunning views with top-quality racing. Unfortunately, however, it is a course that also experiences a fair few casualties – something that is largely due to the hurdles that come in the second half of the home straight. Grounds staff and the Jockey Club do, however, make special efforts to ensure the safety of the competitors through regular testing and maintenance.
