The Turf Itself

Redcar Racecourse is left-handed, oval-shaped and probably best known for the super-long run-in of about 5 furlongs. Other than the two sharp, banked bends, which have been known to cause runners problems in the past, it’s a very fair track that’s pretty much perfectly flat all the way around.

Many of the shorter sprint races held here take place on the 1-mile straight course, which is believed to be the only ‘Straight Mile’ course in the UK that is actually straight and even. Longer races require riders to take the two sharp bends- the bottom one being the trickier of the two – as well as the long final run-in, which places a huge test on stamina. The best tactic seems to be to wait until as late as possible to make that final charge for the line; those that set off too early are almost always left wanting.

Most Popular Redcar Horse Racing Events

Redcar horse racing is probably best known for three events: the Zetland Gold Cup, the Two-Year-Old Trophy and the Guisborough Stakes. With a total prize pot of just under £50,000, the Zetland Gold Cup is run over 1 mile and 2 furlongs, it normally attracts a large field of more than 20 runners and it’s reserved for horses aged three and above. The Two-Year-Old Trophy is a 5-furlong race which takes place in early-October and offers a total purse of £170,000, making it the venue’s most lucrative event; and the Guisborough Stakes is a 7 furlong staged during the same meeting as the former and is reserved for horses aged three and above.

All in all, you won’t find too many special promotions up for grabs for Redcar events, but make sure to keep an eye out for BetVictor promotions, just in case. There may be the odd price boosts deal or perhaps a bet refund or two, but for the most part, the offering is pretty slim.

Some Interesting Facts

Did you know that David Allan is the jockey with the best winning record at the Redcar horse racing track?! He’s managed to record 19 wins and 50 place finishes from 167 so far in his career, which has seen him win £89,848 worth of prize money and accumulate an 11.38% strike rate. His career highlights include a win in the 2009 St Leger Yearling Stakes on Midnight Martini, the Chipchase Stakes and Hackwood Stakes atop Fayr Jag and overseas victories in the Indian version of the 2,000 Guineas. 2016 proved to be a good year for Allan as he rode 63 winners, including one at Royal Ascot, and accumulated more than £900,000 in prize-money.

Redcar Racecourse: The Story so Far

Before the current Redcar Racecourse officially opened its gates in 1875, races were held on the sands at Coatham beach in the early 1700’s. In 1872 the current new racecourse was erected in 1872 in accordance with Jockey Club rules, which stated that hurdles had to be fences and that a parade ring had to be built. The first meeting at the new site was held on August 9th of the same year. In 1875 a new grandstand and Stewards’ stand was built at a cost of £2,650; two years later in 1877 a second stand and stables were built. It was not until the mid-20th century, however, that Redcar horse racing betting was established as a major UK betting market.

To take a look back over the hall of fame at the Redcar horse racing track is to discover some memorable competitors. The Listed Two-Year-Old Trophy, for instance, has seen the likes of Pipalong, Captain Rio, Somnus and Limato be crowned Champion. The Listed Guisborough Stakes has crowned Gonfilia, Council Member and Il Warrd, while the Zetland Gold Cup has seen Blue Monday, winner of several Group 3 races, and Kingdom of Fife, a British gelding that racked up over $1,003,075 in prize money, take away first-place honours.Take a look at our detailed reviews of the UK’s best tracks, for more quality and informative reports.
