Beverley Racecourse is quite unusual in that it is a right-handed track – most tracks in the UK tend to be left-handed, such as the one at York. The round course is oval shaped and just over one mile and three furlongs. The finish is noticeably uphill, however, the final run-in is a pretty modest two-and-a-half furlongs and preceded by a downhill turn immediately before, which undoubtedly compensates for the rising gradient.

The straight track measures in at around five furlongs and rises gradually throughout with a very noticeable dog-leg to the right, which makes it challenging even when the conditions are favourable and pretty gruelling when the going is particularly soft. This also means that there is an obvious draw bias at Beverley; a low draw on the inside is hugely advantageous, with those that draw in the wider lanes or end up being pushed to the outside, having further to run on a ground that slopes in the opposite direction from the turn.

The Hillary Needler Trophy was first staged in 1965 and has always been reserved for two-year-old fillies. It was previously a listed race but was downgraded to Conditions status in 2011 but still offers a nice purse of around £20,000 – about £15,000 goes to the winner, with the rest shared among the 2nd, 3rd and 4th place runners.

The other big event held here is the Beverley Bullet Sprint Stakes, which, having been inaugurated in 2004, is a fairly new contest. Horses aged three-years-old and above are allowed to enter – as long as they have not won a Grade 2 or Grade 3 race since 2015 – and there’s a pretty generous purse of £50,000.

Another memorable competitor in the Beverley Racecourse Hall of Fame is Borderlescott, the British Thoroughbred that recorded his last important win in the Beverley Bullet Sprint Stakes in 2012 with the German-born jockey, Frederik ‘Freddy’ Tylicki. A real crowd-favourite at Beverley, Borderlescott finally won the sprint race after a having failed a couple of times in the same race in previous years. With starting odds of 8/1, he came up with a well-timed finish to pip the favourite Masamah in the final furlong and win by a length. He also won the King George Stakes, the Mercury Stakes and the Steward’s Cup in his career. Beverley Racecourse: The Story so Far

Horse racing at Beverley dates back to the mid-18th century with the founding of the Jockey Club in 1752. The first races that took place were run on the Westwood Pasture; they garnered significant interest, so it was decided that a proper, dedicated racecourse would be built. Following this, the first Grandstand was erected in 1767. Horse racing really picked up here in the 19th century – as did Beverley Racecourse horse racing betting – with a three-day meeting that would be held annually in the Springtime being established.
