Run over a distance of 3miles and 2½furlongs on a left-handed track at the heritage Newmarket Racecourse, this race offers a fair challenge for horses aged four and above at a crucial point in the jump racing season. The course is known as being one of the fairest in the UK; there are a total of 21 fences of average height to be negotiated, two very long straights and two sweeping bends with very few undulations, which means that Ladbrokes Trophy hasn’t produced too many bad-luck stories. The Story So Far

The Ladbrokes Trophy was first run back in 1957 and was then named the Hennessy Cognac Gold Cup. Funnily enough, the winner of the first running at Cheltenham was Mandarin, ridden by Gerry Madden and owned by Peggy Hennessy, who was part of the family that founded the Hennessy Cognac brand, the first sponsor of the race. Four years later in 1961 Mandarin would go on to win the race again; he is one of only three horses in the history of the race to win it more than once.

Back when it was first inaugurated the Trophy was worth a modest £5,272 to the winner. Today, thanks to its lucrative sponsorship with the trademark British betting operator, it is now valued at around £250,000, which has in turn led to it producing winners of great esteem. Ladbrokes Trophy betting has, too, become a major UK pastime as a result. Arkle, the undisputed, greatest steeplechaser in the history of horse racing, won the race twice in 1964 and 1965.
