Despite attracting some 70,000 eager spectators and an 600million television viewers around the world, The Grand National has been the subject of great debate and controversy over the last decade. Due to the gruelling nature of the race – it’s just short of 4.5 miles, has 30 differences fences, and can get pretty hectic with up to 40 runners – it has come under great scrutiny, with animal cruelty campaigners and horse welfare agencies vying to see the race banned due to the high number of horse fatalities over the years.

Whilst it is true that more horses than we would like to see have been forcefully put down due to nasty falls and injuries as a result of the race, there have been changes made to the layout of the course and, occasionally, to the numbers of the runners as to try to make the race as safe as possible. With the help of the British Horse Racing Association and the Aintree Racecourse Authorities, yearly reviews and regular changes to the field seem to have made a great difference as there have been no horse fatalities since the 2012 Grand National.

Grand National Betting Types

When betting on the Grand National, you have many different types of bet you can place. For Novices this can be daunting, however there are a multitude of simple wagers and more complex ones for you to use.

If you are a complete beginner, we recommend just going for the simple option of picking an outright winner. That way, you can enjoy the race and cheer on your horse.

Historical Info on the Grand National

While it doesn’t quite have the long, esteemed history as perhaps Royal Ascot or the Epsom Derby, the Grand National has long been an important part of British horse racing culture. The race is said to have been founded by a Mr William Lynn, who set out the course and built the first Grand Stand. Since then the Aintree Racecourse has undergone a number of redevelopments as is now one of the most prized horse racing venues in the world.

As previously mentioned, the Grand National has been at the centre of much debate and controversy regarding animal safety; so much so that the future of the race has been called into question, particularly between the years 2012-2014. However, with the race now so highly-regarded around the world and steeped in such great tradition, the schemes put in place that allow the BHA, Aintree racecourse and other animal welfare agencies to work together to help to make the race and safe as it is entertaining are set to see the Grand National remain Britain’s leading horse race for many years to come.
