Some Interesting Facts
Taking place at one of the most scenic horse racing venues in the UK, this five-day-long festival is the most quintessentially British event of all we have reviewed. These races tends to signal the end of the classic summer ‘season’ along with other events such as Royal Ascot and Wimbledon. There are several noteworthy races staged across the week, with the Sussex Stakes and the Nassau Stakes among the most prestigious. The Nassau Stakes, which was upgraded to Group One status in 1999, is traditionally held on the third day and offers a generous purse of £600,000.

Most would agree that the Group One Qatar Sussex Stakes is the festival’s most-anticipated race; it is definitely the most valuable, with £1million shared among the place runners, and it has been won by some real legends, including Frankel in 2011 and 2012. The combined purse for the eight most-prestigious races (including the Nassau Stakes and the Sussex Stakes) broke £5million for the first time in 2016 and has continued to increase ever since. This was all made possible through the ten-year sponsorship deal with Qatar Racing – signed in 2015 – which made them official sponsor of the Gotwood Racecourse. It is said to be the single biggest deal of its kind in British racing.
The Story So Far
The Oldest race in the Glorious Goodwood Festival is the Goodwood Cup, which first took place in 1812. In its early years, the festival was held over just two days, but was moved to the end of July in 1814 and then became known as Goodwood Week. Glorious Goodwood betting has steadily increased in recent times as bigger purses have attracted top-level horses and beefed up the field. 2016 saw the winners of the three European Guineas, Galileo Gold, Awtaad and The Gurkha go head-to-head in what was a mouthwatering encounter.

The manager of the Goodwood Racecourse, Alex Eade, has spoken of his desire to elevate the festival to first-class status by having a Group One Race on each day of the festival. In an interview with Sports Pro, he said that he and his team are “working furiously behind the scenes get as many of [their] races upgraded to Group One” as possible, which would see the festival rank among the world’s best. With the partnership with Qatar already having done so much to increase the festival’s profile, there’s every possibility that Goodwood may realise its vision in the not too distant future.
