Some Interesting Facts
This three-day flat racing festival is a real favourite among UK horse racing fans which features some top-rated Group Races along with some well-respected handicaps. The more prestigious of all the races held here are the Cheveley Park Stakes, a Group 1 sprint for two-year-old fillies; the Middle Park Stakes, another Group 1 sprint but for two-year-old colts; and the Sun Chariot Stakes, a middle-distance race for fillies and mares aged three and above. The main event, however, is the Cambridgeshire Stakes, which is traditionally held on the final day of the festival and represents the first half of the infamous Autumn Double of racing – the second half is The Cesarewitch, which takes place about a month later.

Traditionally held toward the end of the flat racing season, Cambridgeshire Meeting betting features a few races that offer some serious prize money to those that manage to place. The Sun Chariot Stakes, which has been known to garner as much attention as the Cambridgeshire Stakes in the past, boasts a whopping shared purse of £250,000. The second richest is the Cheverly Park Stakes, which has a shared purse of £180,000, and the third is the Cambridgeshire Handicap, which offers £160,000.
The Story So Far
The oldest race in the Cambridgeshire meeting is the Cambridgeshire Handicap, which was first inaugurated in 1839. It was founded at the same time as another one of Newmarket’s prestigious handicaps, the Cesarewitch. Together, the two combine to form what is now known as the Autumn Double. Bendigo, an extremely successful horse in his day, won one of the earlier Cambridgeshire Handicap races back in 1883. He is probably the most successful horse ever to have won the Handicap in its remarkable history which spans almost two centuries.
