Historical Info

The Breeders’ Cup was envisioned by horse owner John R. Gaines, who proposed the concept during a luncheon for the well-established Kentucky Derby. The first event took place in 1984 over one day, featuring seven races. In the 34 years to follow the event has expanded to thirteen races, now taking place over two days.

The only horse to have ever won the Breeders’ Cup Classic twice is Tiznow, ridden by jockey Chris McCarron, who also holds the record with Jerry Bailey (5) for the most Cup Classic wins. Yet just before the second time the infamously quirky horse spent a total of forty minutes resisting his attempts to break him into a gallop, making that eventual win all the more impressive. When it comes to leading jockeys, Mike Smith is the breakaway performer, having amassed a remarkable 25 race wins throughout his career. He has also won the Cup Classic four times, including last year with Arrogate, the all-time money earner in North America.
