As it only happens for two days each year, some operators will create special offers to make you bet on a horse. Other tasty offers are payouts even if your horse finishes fifth or eighth, or money back if your horse ends up as a non-finisher. With so many different operators trying to entice you to bet with them, take a long and hard look across all markets to find an offer that you think works best for you.

Some Interesting Facts

With the prize money for the Classic Race totaling a whopping $6 million alone, The Breeders’ Cup is one of the most lucrative events worldwide for jockeys making money from racing horses. For a long time the event was the most expensive in the world, but it has now been usurped by the Dubai World Cup night, which currently totals a staggering $27.5 million.

Unlike many other events, the Breeders’ Cup isn’t located at just one site. Invented to promote the sport across North America, the event has been played out at racetracks as diverse as Santa Anita Park, Keeneland, Belmont Park and Hollywood Park. While the first day of the event is dedicated to female horses, the final day, which includes the world-famous Cup Classic, is for male horses.

The event has one of the most exciting qualification processes in worldwide Horse Racing. Introduced in 2010, the Win and You’re In incentive means that any thoroughbred horse that wins a major race of their choosing across the world automatically qualifies for a position at the championship. Thus this wide selection of horses across places as varied as North America, Ireland, the UK, Japan, Italy and South Africa, gives the Breeders’ Cup an international feel that few other race events can match. For the Cup Classic, the qualifying races are from races in New York, New Jersey, Kentucky and Tokyo. Nevertheless, the remaining horses are chosen by a panel of judges based on various criteria.

Historical Info

The Breeders’ Cup was envisioned by horse owner John R. Gaines, who proposed the concept during a luncheon for the well-established Kentucky Derby. For such a young event, the Cup was initially met with high disdain by many in the horse racing community, but is now one of the glitziest racing events across the whole world. The first event took place in 1984 over one day, featuring seven races. In the 34 years to follow the event has expanded to thirteen races, now taking place over two days.

The only horse to have ever won the Breeders’ Cup Classic twice is Tiznow, ridden by jockey Chris McCarron, who also holds the record with Jerry Bailey (5) for the most Cup Classic wins. Yet just before the second time the infamously quirky horse spent a total of forty minutes resisting his attempts to break him into a gallop, making that eventual win all the more impressive. When it comes to leading jockeys, Mike Smith is the breakaway performer, having amassed a remarkable 25 race wins throughout his career. He has also won the Cup Classic four times, including last year with Arrogate, the all-time money earner in North America.
