Ridden by James Doyle and owned by Sheikh Mohammed’s Godolphin stable, Blue Point has won an impressive 11 of his 20 total starts.
Speaking about the horse, trainer Charlie Appleby said:
Blue Point has had a fantastic week and has managed to succeed where many horses have failed in completing this extraordinary double. Blue Point has a fantastic mind, is a natural athlete and was a pleasure to train. To do what he did within five days was the pinnacle of his career and he couldn’t have done any more. He retires fit and well to Dalham Hall… we don’t think he has anything else to prove. I have every confidence he will, like his sire Shamardal, be a huge success as a stallion.– Charlie Appleby, Blue Point trainer
Blue Point was bred in Ireland and trained in Britain. In 2016 at two years old he won the Gimcrack Stakes and also placed in the Richmond Stakes, Middle Park Stakes, and Dewhurst Stakes, to make him one of the most successful two-year-olds that year.
He developed even further the next year, with wins at the Pavilion Stakes and Bengough Stakes. His first Group 1 win came the following year in the King’s Stand Stakes, before his fantastic double this year.
It makes sense for Blue Point to be retired now, as it appears he will never better this year’s achievements. The King’s Stand Stakes victory was incredible, with Blue Point starting 5/2 second favourite next to Battaash. Blue Point won by one and a quarter lengths in a field of ten.
Just four days later he raced off in the Diamond Jubilee Stakes over six furlongs. In a seventeen strong field Blue Point took the lead a furlong from the finish and eventually won by a head.
